Maoist blockade affects 16 districts: KATHMANDU, March 14 - Economic activity in 16 districts of the western region has come to a grinding halt as a result of the Maoist-imposed ‘economic blockade’ for over two weeks beginning from March 7.

The so-called economic blocked, imposed to restrict Their Majesties’ informal visit to Pokhara on March 28, has created acute shortage of petroleum products, essential commodities, and construction materials in the region.

Despite the government’s claims that it has made adequate security arrangements, all pubic vehicles and transport trucks remained off the major highways for fear of Maoist reprisals. Vehicular movement on rural areas had already been stopped once the rebels announced the imposition of the blockade.

Our correspondent in Pokhara said that long-distance vehicles to various parts of the country, including the capital, were off the road from Saturday after the rebels set fire to three buses under the Prithvi Highway Bus Management Committee within a period of two days.

Committee Vice-President Bhakta Bahadur K.C. said that they had to bear a daily loss of Rs. 20 million due to the closure of public transport. Around 250 public buses ply on the country’s Major Highways under the committee’s syndicate system while other independent companies provide their services with more than 50 buses from the tourism city of Pokhara daily.

"We decided to suspend our service because neither the government nor insurance companies compensate for losses of our property," K.C. said, adding that the government did not compensate for the vandalism of their property by the rebels in the past.

Meanwhile, Transport Management Office located at the heart of the city, New Road; collapsed when a powerful bomb left behind by a rebel Maoist went off inside the office at about 11:30 a.m. Typist Badrikant Sharma said the bomb exploded five minutes after the Maoist left the office. The explosion blew up its roof made up of corrugated sheet about 50 meters away from the office.

"I was engrossed in my work when the rebel fled the office saying that there was a bomb inside the office," Sharma said. The bomb went off five minutes after the Maoist, who could not be identified immediately, fled the scene. Nobody was hurt, as everyone had rushed out before the explosion.

Likewise, a report from Lamjung said that construction work of the 70-MW Middle Marshyangdi Hydroelectric Project has been suspended indefinitely, citing unavailability of petroleum products due to the blockade.

Contractors said the project needed about 15,000 liters of fuel daily to operate the civil works round-the-clock. Petroleum products are ferried from Amlekhgunj depot.

But a source close to the project said the contractor took it as an excuse to suspend the works citing the shortage of fuel. "There is still 100,000 liters of fuel in stock which is enough to run the work for 10 more days," added the source.
