NEPAL Gajendra Karna, (m), student, aged 30
Amnesty International has been informed that Gajendra Karna was released on 9 January 2002.
According to sources, Gajendra Karna was arrested in Dhading district on 21 December 2001 by army personnel who then handed him over to the police. He was held for a few days at a small area police office before being transferred to the Dhading District police office. He was held incommunicado for 20 days in police custody, before being released unconditionally.
Gajendra Karna is a member of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) (2002), which is affiliated to the Samyukta Jana Morcha (United People’s Front). It is believed that he was arrested on suspicion of being a member or supporter of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) (Maoist).
