NHRC expresses its serious concern over the re-arrest of Rajendra Kumar Rai

The National Human Rights Commission expresses its serious concern over the re -arrest of Rajendra Kumar Rai, former President of All Nepal National Free Students' Union (ANNFSU) from the Kathmandu District Court premises yesterday against the order of habeas corpus issued by the Supreme Court. The government has violated its statutory obligation to abide by the orders made by the independent judiciary; having the brutal re-arrest of the person from the court premises itself, who was released from the illegal detention before the honorable judge of district court following the order of the court. The Commission pays serious attention over this incident which was under watch of the representatives from National Human Rights Commission, United Nation High Commission for Human Rights in Nepal, and other non-governmental organizations working in human rights sector and the judges and the lawyers. As it is the grave violation of basic norms and values of human rights to assault brutally the lawyers, Journalists, human rights defenders and students who were requesting the security personnel not to re-arrest the person who was released by the order made by the court; the Commission reminds the government to arrange for the dissemination of information to all levels of the security bodies to stop such incidents in the days to come.
